St. Carlo Acutis
Italian teenager and computer programmer who built a website cataloguing Eucharistic miracles before dying of leukemia at 15 — canonized in 2025 as the first millennial saint.
Carlo Acutis was born in 1991 in London to Italian parents and grew up in Milan in entirely ordinary circumstances — a cheerful, popular boy who loved soccer, video games, his dog, and above all computers, teaching himself to program and design websites while still in his early teens. To his friends he seemed a normal, fun-loving kid; what set him apart was the depth of his faith woven quietly through it all.
From a young age Carlo was drawn powerfully to the Eucharist, which he called 'my highway to heaven,' and he went to Mass and Eucharistic adoration daily. He was matter-of-fact about his faith, kind to those left out, and quick to defend classmates who were bullied, insisting that what mattered was not to stand out but to give oneself entirely to God. 'All people are born as originals,' he liked to say, 'but many die as photocopies.'
He turned his great gift for technology toward his faith, spending more than two years building a website that documented and mapped reported Eucharistic miracles from around the world — a project that has since traveled as an exhibition to thousands of parishes across the globe. It was holiness expressed through the very tools of his generation.
In 2006, at only fifteen, Carlo was suddenly stricken with an aggressive leukemia. He offered his sufferings for the pope and the Church and died within days, asking to be buried in Assisi, the city of St. Francis. Laid to rest in jeans and sneakers, he was beatified in 2020 and canonized in 2025 — the first saint of the millennial generation, and a patron of young people and of the internet.
He wore sneakers, played video games (limiting himself to one hour a week), coded websites — and is now a canonized saint. He called the Eucharist 'my highway to heaven.'
“All people are born as originals, but many die as photocopies.”
