St. Cyril of Jerusalem

St. Cyril of Jerusalem

Bishop & Doctor of the Church · c. 313–386

Patron of Catechists

Bishop of Jerusalem whose lectures to new converts remain a master class in teaching the faith; exiled three times in the Arian crisis.

He spent 16 of his 35 years as bishop in exile — and still left us some of the most beautiful catechesis ever written.

“The dragon sits by the side of the road, watching those who pass. Beware lest he devour you. We go to the Father of souls, but it is necessary to pass by the dragon.”
— St. Cyril of Jerusalem
