Feast day: March 14

St. Matilda

Queen · c. 895–968

Patron of Widows, large families

A queen of Germany famed for her charity and patience, who endured the rivalry of her sons and devoted her widowhood to founding monasteries and feeding the poor.

Her own sons accused her of squandering the treasury on the poor — so she gave away even more, founding abbeys and hospitals across Saxony.
